Mojkovac: the town, how to get there, and the fishing

Fishing in Mojkovac means the Tara, and the Tara here is the biggest water I guide on the river. Mojkovac is the downstream town of the two on the Tara I fish from; by the time the river reaches it, the streams that join between Kolašin and here have filled it out. Grayling first, brown trout with them, and huchen living in the river. This page is the town, the drive from the airports and Podgorica, and what a day on the river from Mojkovac is.

About Mojkovac

Mojkovac is a small town on the right bank of the Tara, downstream of Kolašin, with the Bjelasica, Sinjajevina and Prošćenske mountains around it and a national park on either side: Biogradska Gora up the valley, Durmitor over the hills to the north-west. The municipality counted 6,728 people in the 2023 census. The national tourist board says the town is “brought to life” by the river, and from the bank that is how it feels: the Tara is the middle of the place, not something at the edge of it.

The town’s history is in the ground. Brskovo, above the town, was a medieval mining settlement, one of the oldest mines in the region, and its archaeological sites are the first thing the local tourist organisation names. The tourist board links the town’s name to a medieval mint and its coin. The stone bridge over the Tara, the Old Bridge, is the town’s meeting place and the site of a diving competition each summer.

Practical things: the town has the everyday services a visitor needs; the railway station on the Belgrade–Bar line is in the town; the bus station too. The river is a short walk from the centre.

Getting to Mojkovac

Mojkovac sits on the main road north. From Podgorica the route is the motorway to Mateševo, then the old road through Kolašin and down the valley beside the Tara.

From Drive, about Distance, about
Podgorica Airport (TGD) 1 hour 45 minutes 90 km
Tivat Airport (TIV) 3 hours 10 minutes 160 km
Podgorica city centre 1 hour 30 minutes 80 km

Figures from the OSRM route planner on OpenStreetMap data, read on 13 October 2026, rounded. Mountain roads and summer traffic between the coast and Podgorica change them. From Tivat the drive runs through Podgorica and then north; from Kolašin it is a short drive down the valley.

The Belgrade–Bar railway stops at Mojkovac, on its way between Bijelo Polje, Kolašin and Podgorica. It is slower than the road and runs a few times a day.

One road to know about: from Mojkovac a regional road follows the Tara north-west to the Đurđevića Tara bridge and on to Žabljak. It was closed for landslide works and reopened at the end of December 2025, the government said. It is the way from the Tara I fish to Žabljak and Black Lake, on another day.

Fishing from Mojkovac

The Tara at Mojkovac

This is the lowest of the three stretches I guide on the Tara. Upstream is the national park stretch and above that the town stretch at Kolašin; the whole river, source to canyon, is in the Tara page and the Journal’s Tara guide, and I will not repeat them. What is different here is the size of the water. More tributaries have joined, and the river is bigger.

Below the town the Tara turns north-west and goes into its canyon, by the World Bank’s 2016 study of the Drina basin. The canyon belongs to the rafts. The stretches I guide are above it, and the river at Mojkovac is where my water ends.

We wade. Most of the day is fished with a euro nymphing rig, and when the grayling are on the surface we change to a dry fly. Huchen live here; for huchen I fish mostly the Lim at Plav, then Berane, then the Tara, with big streamers on a #8 rod, in the mornings, catch and release all year in the fly fishing zones. Tell me if that is the fish you are after and I will tell you what I think of your dates.

In the fly fishing zones the Tara is fished all year, when the water level allows. June to October are the best months for grayling and brown trout. The river is highest in April and May, with the melt, and lowest in August and September. Fish and seasons has every water by month, and the river levels article has the gauge figures.

Up the valley: the park and the lake

The national park stretch of the Tara lies between Mojkovac and Kolašin, and Biogradsko Lake is in the same park. A day from Mojkovac can start on the river here and finish on the lake, for brown trout and lake char from the bank, from 1 May to 1 October. The lake is on its own page, with the park’s hours and permit.

Permits, price, what is in a day

The Tara at Mojkovac is fished on the local club’s permit; the park stretch and the lake on the national park’s permit. I buy whichever the day needs, and the permits are in the price, as is lunch. The guided day is 190 EUR for one angler and 60 EUR more for a second; up to four can come, and for three or four I give you the group price when you write. If you stay in Mojkovac, I drive you to the water on the fishing day and that is in the price; pickup from Podgorica, an airport or the coast is something we arrange when you write. Catch and release only, barbless hooks, a landing net. I reply within one day. No deposit; cancelling costs nothing.

A day off the water

Mojkovac is quieter than Kolašin and the things to do are outdoors.

  • Brskovo. The archaeological sites of the medieval mining town above Mojkovac are the place’s history, and a walk up to them is the local half day.
  • The Old Bridge and the river. The stone bridge over the Tara is the centre of town life; in summer a diving competition is held from it. Walking the bank downstream gives a view of where the river turns toward the canyon.
  • Paragliding. The tourist board says Mojkovac has take-off sites for different winds through the year, and the local tourist organisation lists aerial sightseeing.
  • On foot, by bike, on horseback. Hiking, cycling, horse riding and quad rides are the tourist organisation’s list; the katuns, the summer huts of the mountain pastures, are the destination for most of them.
  • Two parks. Biogradska Gora is up the valley, with the lake path and its trails; Durmitor and the Tara canyon are north-west along the road to Žabljak. From Mojkovac both are a day out for someone who is not fishing.

Questions

Is there fishing in Mojkovac?

Yes. The Tara at Mojkovac is one of the three stretches I guide on the river: grayling mostly, brown trout, and huchen live in the river. It is the biggest water of the three.

How far is Mojkovac from Podgorica Airport?

About 90 km and about 1 hour 45 minutes by the OSRM planner, read in October 2026. From Tivat Airport about 160 km and 3 hours 10 minutes.

What is different about the Tara at Mojkovac and at Kolašin?

The size. At Mojkovac the river has gathered its tributaries and is bigger. Kolašin is the smaller, upstream water. I guide both and the park stretch between them.

Can I fish the Tara canyon from Mojkovac?

No. The canyon below the town is rafting water, and I do not guide in it. My stretches are above it.

Is there a train to Mojkovac?

Yes, the Belgrade–Bar railway stops at Mojkovac. Most guests come by road.

Plan from here

The water: the Tara, and Biogradsko Lake up the valley. When to come: Fish and seasons. How a day works: Plan your trip. A day here is single-day guiding; the Tara on one day and the Lim on another is a multi-day trip. Upstream is Kolašin; along the river road to the north-west is Žabljak.

Tell me your dates and I will tell you what the river at Mojkovac is doing. Request your dates.

Waters fished from Mojkovac

  • Tara: The Tara flows north past Kolašin and on to Mojkovac. I guide it at Kolašin, inside Biogradska Gora National Park and at Mojkovac. The fish are mostly grayling, with brown trout.
  • Biogradsko Lake: Biogradsko Lake lies in Biogradska Gora National Park, near Kolašin. I guide here from the bank, for brown trout and lake char.
